Why did the Cold War end peacefully? And why did neoliberal economics spread throughout the world at the end of the 20th century? The Cold War began as a competition between capitalist and communist governments to offer their citizens a better life. But the economic crisis of the 1970s made the promise unsustainable on both sides of the Berlin Wall. Using Fritz Bartel's essay, * The Triumph of Broken Promises *, the speakers will discuss how the exorbitant rise in oil prices ultimately led to the triumph of neoliberal ideology.
