Seven Thresholds of Music
We present Seven Thresholds of Music, the new essay by Tomás Marco, composer, musicologist and president of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, a reflection on the different levels that traverse the musical experience, from the physical perception of sound to its symbolic and emotional dimension.
The book proposes a journey through seven “thresholds”: perception, the body, technique, the stage, ideas, the imagination, and silence. Seven ways of approaching music not as a closed object, but as a complex experience that connects listening, memory, thought, and representation.
The essay serves as an invitation to consider what happens when sound ceases to be mere matter and becomes emotion, knowledge, and cultural form. Throughout the text, questions arise concerning musical tradition, dramaturgy, abstraction, and the very limits of listening.
Joining the author in the conversation will be Ignacio Herrera, director of the Royal Cavalry Armory of Ronda, and Pedro Vázquez Marín, editor of the volume.
