The fractured self It is a philosophical celebration of the four hundredth anniversary of the first part of Don Quixote. The essays collected in this volume aim to establish constellations of meaning between the Baroque and the turbulent landscape of these early years of the third millennium, in view of the resonances that Baroque figures—the simulation of death, dreams, theater and simulacra, the Christian, the infidel, the savage—produce in the culture of advanced societies. All these images, which converge around the representation of the fractured self, are found within Cervantes's novel: a sane ship of fools, whose revisiting may perhaps illuminate enigmatic aspects of our own society.
