En Argelia. Imágenes del desarraigo
Pierre Bourdieu He lived in Algeria between 1955 and 1961. This six-year stay was crucial for his work, as he honed his analytical tools there in the field and laid many of the foundations of his thinking. In Algeria. Images of displacement illustrates and glosses this Algerian passion Bourdieu's book includes over 150 photographs from the many taken by the young sociologist, driven by the desire to support his field notes and to take the pulse of a region undergoing a period of conflict and transformation: the journey towards independence, the migration from the countryside to the city and the consequent uprooting of the old peasant class, changes in customs, the abandonment of ancestral traditions, the new leading role of women in the urban environment. The volume is completed with two essays by Christine Frisinghelli y Franz Schultheis and an interview with Pierre Bourdieu about the place and importance of photography in his sociological work.
“Bourdieu situates his photographic work within the context of his anthropological and sociological work. [?] Photography captivated him because it expressed the distant gaze of the researcher who records but who, nevertheless, remains aware of what he records, with his ability to immediately fix, from a familiar distance, the details that, at the moment of perception, go unnoticed or escape deeper examination.” (Christine Frisinghelli)
