One of the vectors that determined the character and scope of the most relevant artistic experiences of the past century was the reformulation of the always problematic relationship between image and word. Since the avant-garde era, literature and the visual arts have striven tirelessly to move away from the specter of representation and reveal the very structure of art, bringing to light the unspeakable rhythm that resonates in every painting, poem, sculpture, or theatrical production.
During the autumn months of 2006, the CBA delved into this fundamental aspect of our recent culture. Firstly, through three monographic exhibitions of artists who throughout their careers actively combined the visual arts and literature, three key artists for understanding the heroic age of twentieth-century art: Mario Cesariny, jean arp y Henri michauxFrom their beginnings, in the wake of Surrealism, they all strove to shatter the barriers separating painting, sculpture, poetry, and the performing arts.
