Martin Chirino (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1925), Medalla de Oro del Círculo de Bellas Artes And President of this institution between 1982 and 1992, he is one of the most outstanding Spanish sculptors of recent decades. Trained by the sculptor Manuel Ramos at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid and the School of Fine Arts in London, and co-founder of the El Paso group in 1957, Chirino has primarily used iron in his search for an abstract language, devoid of narrative features and of enormous expressive richness.

His sculptures respond to a double impulse: the dialogue with primitive art and the native materials and landscape of the Canary Islands, read with the eyes of imaginative evocation and childhood memory, and a powerful signifying impulse that generates all kinds of spatial geometries, generally curved (spirals, rings, ovals), capable of illuminating the space that surrounds them and being at the same time, for those who contemplate them, enigma and revelation.

Martín Chirino. Works for a Collection brings together texts by Antonio Bonet Correa , Antonio Fernández-Alba, Serge Fauchereau and Fernando Castro Flórez about the work of the brilliant sculptor, and a selection of images of the sculptures that make up the exhibition, including some of his famous "afrocanes", and others with titles as significant as Poetic and Useless Tool or My Homeland is a Rock.
