Mario Cesariny (Lisbon, 1923) is widely known as one of the most significant and controversial poetic voices of Portuguese Surrealism. However, for a long time his visual art, which accompanies and even precedes some of the most intense moments of his poetry, has not received the same recognition, a situation that has only begun to change in recent years. Historically, Cesariny's work is part of the postwar non-geometric abstraction movement and played a prominent role in the break with more orthodox Surrealist figuration. Ship of Mirrors aims to contribute to the rediscovery of the profound unity underlying the various facets of Cesariny's work through a broad selection of drawings, paintings, collages, objects, and assemblages created between the second half of the 1940s and the present day. The volume is completed with a poetic anthology and a selection of short texts by the artist, as well as various essays and articles on Cesariny written by renowned experts on his work, such as Joao Pinharanda and Perfecto E. Cuadrado, and an exhaustive biobibliography.
