"Against economic inequality?" is the tenth panel of the CONGRESS AGAINST IDENTITY? DIVERSITY, ALTERITY AND DIFFERENCE #CongressIdentities organized by students of the Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree from UAB, UC3M, UAM and UPF.

Economic inequality is a reality in our country and around the world. However, it is also undeniable that our societies as a whole are wealthier than they were in the last century. Besides focusing on reducing poverty, should we also strive to eradicate inequality?

Equality of opportunity, a fundamental principle of John Rawls, is today an ideal widely defended by most political forces. César Rendueles defines it as a kind of “social anti-doping control,” but also as a “meritocratic project.” Is economic inequality legitimate if we start from the same conditions?

Furthermore, the problem of "polarization" is currently present in many public discussions and debates. We seem to miss having more cohesion, a more unified common identity.

However, as philosopher Michael Sandel argues, the belief that our social successes and failures depend solely on ourselves makes empathy impossible. Is a cohesive society possible when economic inequality exists?
