Conversation: Music, nihilism, and the politics of disaster
The philosopher and poet Alberto Santamaría presents his latest publication, "A Place Without Limits" (Akal), with a three-way conversation entitled "Music, Nihilism, and the Politics of Disaster in the Age of Neoliberalism," bringing together the author with Ana Useros (writer and activist) and César Rendueles (philosopher and sociologist). www.circulobellasartes.com In 1976, as Milton Friedman received the Nobel Prize in Economics, punk expanded its message of dissonance, pushing the boundaries of what could be said into previously unexplored territories. It was the decade of estrangement, in which the postwar economic dream crumbled, giving rise to a new specter: neoliberalism. In response, cultural movements with a clearly antagonistic message emerged; punk rock, disco, and other cultural phenomena embraced nihilism and protest until they were devoured by the market. A meeting to not only make a radical reading of a decade where culture and politics intersect through music, but also to confront cultural defeats that continue to haunt us.
