Catalogue from the exhibition of Hans Hartung (Leipzig, 1904–Antibes, 1989), known as one of the forerunners of so-called abstract expressionism, explores the critical distance between drawing and finished work, as well as the rationalization of the creative process behind this distance, revealing an aspect of Hartung's work that has been neglected until now and is even incompatible with the traditional image of the Franco-German painter. The catalogue is completed with essays by Franz Kaiser and Juan Manuel Bonet that explore not only his personal poetics but also Hartung's close ties to Spain: a disciple of the sculptor Julio González, whose daughter, Roberta González, he was married to for more than ten years, he spent long periods in Menorca and in the Almerian town of Carboneras, as the many photographs of the artist himself included in this catalogue remind us.
