Graffiti | Brassaï

Brassaï , pseudonym of the Hungarian photographer, illustrator, and writer Gyula Halász (1899–1984), who lived in Paris from 1924, began to take an interest in graffiti around 1930. A pioneer in conceiving this expressive form as an art, the photographer, close to and associated with the Surrealist movement, was convinced that these seemingly vulgar or insignificant manifestations were, in reality, an emanation of the dream world. This catalogue presents, for the first time in Spain, a wide selection of these photographs, arranged and classified by the photographer himself. In addition to essays by Oliva María Rubio , Agnès de Gouvion Saint-Cyr , and Carmen Gallardo, it includes texts by Brassaï himself and an excerpt from Antoni Tàpies 's *Communication on the Wall*.
