Why did the Cold War end peacefully? And why did neoliberal economics spread throughout the world at the end of the 20th century? The Cold War, which began as a competition between capitalist and communist governments to offer a better life to their citizens, was impacted by the economic crisis of the 1970s, which made that promise unsustainable on both sides of the Berlin Wall. In this talk, the speakers discussed, based on Fritz Bartel's essay * The Triumph of Broken Promises *, how the exorbitant rise in oil prices contributed to the triumph of neoliberal ideology.
