Manuela Malasaña. Homage to Benito Pérez Galdós: Compañía Suite Española
A reflection on women, culture as an intangible asset across time, and the need for a universal consciousness to confront and overcome society's ills. A work of dance, music, and theater, with dramatic direction by Javier Garcimatín, that reflects the temporal paradox of time travel, addressing existential anxieties. Ricardo Castro Romero's choreography delves into feelings from the individual perspectives of the characters to convey a full range of emotions.
The Compañía Suite Española has performed for 26 years on stages around the world, has been awarded the National Prize for Living Culture, and is also the first flamenco company invited to the Kirov International Ballet Festival at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Company members Ricardo and Rosario Castro have been choreographers and solo dancers with the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow since 2015.
Manuela the embroiderer waited, on the orders of the owner of the sewing workshop where she worked, for the shooting to stop so she could deliver a precious commission before returning home. On her way, she crossed paths with a patrol of French soldiers who intercepted her. Popular lore claims they tried to assault her and that Manuela attempted to defend herself with her scissors. She was arrested, accused of carrying a weapon, and executed. Her death, like that of so many heroines throughout history, highlights, even today, the ongoing struggle for freedom, respect, equality, and humanity's awakening to diversity as true richness. The death of Manuela Malasaña marks the birth of a myth, as well as the deep-seated spirit of one of the most emblematic neighborhoods that gave identity to the Movida Madrileña; its characters will transport us to the golden age of the 80s. Malasaña, bohemian heart, source of inspiration, where your past, present, and future converge among balconies and windows.
