[df-subtitle]Ethnographic cinema and social documentary: audiovisual tools for anthropological research and social action[/df-subtitle]

The purpose of ethnographic cinema is to help viewers understand the society depicted, discover its structural features, and grasp its patterns of behavior, values, and beliefs. From its origins, anthropology has used photography and film to create and transmit images of the cultures it studies. This has allowed for the development of visual anthropology, a discipline that employs images as a research resource, as a means of transmitting ethnographic experiences, and as a generator of anthropological knowledge.

Since the dawn of cinema, numerous documentary filmmakers have been interested in creating films that denounce various social problems, aiming to move, mobilize, and promote the fight against inequality. In times of social crisis, the production of social and anthropological documentaries serves as a platform for reflection and popular action, understood as a reclaiming of identity through the creation of an autonomous, democratic, and self-managed culture. Therefore, this course aims to develop a practical approach that enables participants to create their own audiovisual pieces to enhance media control and disseminate popular demands in the pursuit of equality and social justice.

The course will also feature the participation of the pioneer of anthropological cinema in Spain. Luis Pancorbo, which will offer a master class of a theoretical and practical nature, which will be organized in three parts: in the first of them, the theories and modes of representation of ethnographic and social cinema throughout history will be analyzed, through the projection and analysis of social documentaries; in the second, a photography practice will be carried out framed within the ethnographic fieldwork and the pre-production of the documentary; and in the third, the steps to follow in the making of a social documentary of an anthropological nature will be addressed.

• To introduce the necessary tools for the production of an ethnographic-social documentary, from description to cultural and social interpretation.
• To share with communities and collectives how to use audiovisual tools, so that they can self-manage their production and record their struggles.
• To show students, both theoretically and practically, the models of collaboration with the protagonists of a social documentary and the modes of representation in ethnographic cinema.
• Study the ethnofilmmakers and documentary filmmakers who have made important contributions to the history of ethnographic documentary film.
• Analyze various audiovisual works with an anthropological and social basis.
• To train students in the use of audiovisual media (in their social research work), as powerful tools for the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of studies.
• Reflecting on the potential of documentary film as a tool to raise awareness, sensitize, agitate and mobilize society.
• Develop a critical analysis of the use of audiovisual language in the Social Sciences.
