Fathy Salama grew up on the banks of the Nile, his sensibility influenced by two distinct currents: the memory of Arabic song and the sophisticated European compositions of Arnold Schoenberg, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and Béla Bartók. Fathy, who studied classical piano, merged these two approaches into one, and, after a visit to the United States, added the dynamic structure of jazz to his musical framework.

In addition to writing songs tailored to variety artists from his country such as Amr Diab or Ali Al Haggar, Salama has written music for film, has competed with jazz musicians such as Sun Ra, Barry Harris or Malik Osman, has collaborated with Youssou 'N Dour and has played at festivals such as Les Transmusicales de Rennes.
