Thirty years have passed since the premiere of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira , and since then science fiction manga and anime have taken over the collective imagination, influencing all filmmakers, illustrators and writers, both great and small, and yet, few cinematic works have achieved the height and impact of the original film, a brilliant adaptation of Otomo's own comic series.
