The Green Ray: Rapt, by Dimitri Kirsanoff

About the film
Rapt, like the novel La Séparation des races (1922) by Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz, on which it is based, takes place on both sides of the Alpine slopes, where communities live that are diametrically opposed in every way: language, customs, and religion. They ignore each other until an incident leads Firmin, a Valaisan peasant, to kidnap Elsi, a Bernese woman. The snow forces him to keep her in his village. This situation fuels desire, jealousy, and a thirst for revenge. Besides its visual stylization, Rapt is distinguished by its sound experiments and the work of two actresses of enormous magnetism: Nadia Sibirskaïa, Kirsanoff's creative and personal partner, who had already appeared in the sublime Ménilmontant (Kirsanoff, 1926), and Dita Parlo, the Juliette of L'Atalante (Jean Vigo, 1934) and Elsa of La Grande Illusion (Jean Renoir, 1937), among others. "Often, a single image is accompanied by a single sound: the image of swaying trees is accompanied by an abstract sound of howling wind. In Rapt, sound does not function as a mere 'channel of reality' that can be switched on or off. The sounds stand out and acquire the status of independent events. They become a reality in their own right, not just an accompaniment to the image." (Gerard-Jan Claes, Sabzian, 2025)
