Steele is a screenwriter commissioned to adapt a low-quality bestseller. Coincidentally, Mildred, a girl who works at the club Steele frequents, has read the book, and he decides to take her home so she can tell him the plot. The next morning, he learns that Mildred has been murdered, and Steele becomes the prime suspect.
