Good Times, Wonderful Times

To capture reality spontaneously and bring it to life, of course, you have to do more than just work with the people around you. You have to let them be themselves, let them express themselves in their own way, but in accordance with the abstractions and themes that you, as the director, want to see in them. This is very different from traditional screenwriting, where the ideas and abstractions are essentially the screenwriter's, and professional actors embody those ideas and abstractions through their personalities. But I think the method I've followed in my films expresses the inner lives of people in a particular environment in a deeper and truer way.
