Diotima Quartet

Beethoven in twilight

One of the world's most versatile and distinguished quartets, the Diotima Quartet, presents a program in which intimacy intertwines with visionary language. With his Intimate Letters, Janáček transforms into music an overflowing and turbulent passion, the one he felt for Kamila Stösslová, a married woman 38 years his junior. Beneath its more or less twelve-tone structure, Berg's Lyric Suite also contains a hidden program that traces his feverish infatuation with Hanna Fuchs-Robettin. The concert closes with Beethoven's last quartet, Op. 135, a work that, after the density of its later predecessors, recovers a deceptive transparency, with the famous question "Muss es sein?" ("Must it be?") resonating like a final enigma that was actually opening paths to the future.
