Bruno Schulz. The Dark Country
The Dark Country is the first exhibition in Spain dedicated to one of the essential figures of the Polish avant-garde between the wars: the painter and writer Bruno Schulz (Drohobycz, 1892-1942). His work, indebted to Expressionism and Symbolism, is also influenced by German Magic Realism and artists such as Balthus and Pierre Klossowski.
The exhibition includes a wide selection of Schulz's visual and literary works. Drawings and prints are on display, including the 49 glass plate negatives that comprise his Idolater's Book , as well as his only known painting, The Reunion . Also featured are the two titles that make up his literary work, The Cinnamon Shops (1934) and The Hourglass Sanatorium (1937), and a selection of the magazines to which he contributed. The exhibition also includes two sections—"The Imaginary Museum and Library of Bruno Schulz" and "The Polish Context"—which aim to contextualize Schulz's work within the art world of the early 20th century.
