Grete Stern. Dreams
Grete Stern (Germany, 1904) studied graphic arts in Stuttgart and photography at the Bauhaus School, where she met the Argentine photographer Horacio Coppola, whom she married in 1935. The following year, the couple moved permanently to Buenos Aires, where Stern remained until her death in 1999.
In 1948, he began collaborating with the magazine Idilio, creating photomontages based on the analysis of dreams submitted by female readers. The sociologist Gino Germani, the magazine's director, was responsible for interpreting them, using the pseudonym Richard Rest. Stern's collaboration with the magazine lasted approximately three years, during which he published over one hundred works.
Grete Stern used photomontage to represent previously silenced conflicts associated with women of humble social classes in Argentina: daily frustrations, unconfessed desires, marital fights… Through surreal compositions, she created a critical, ingenious, unique and absolutely revolutionary work.
