PHE 17 | Paulo Nozolino. Loaded Shine

This series of twenty photographs, all in black and white, taken between 2008 and 2013 in New York, Lisbon, Paris, and Berlin, as well as in the French and Portuguese countryside, reveals Nozolino's characteristic dark, symbolic syntax. These vertical images demonstrate once again his enduring preoccupation with the state of the world and his pursuit of the pure, authentic, unmanipulated analog image.

Paulo Nozolino is a central figure in contemporary photography. His career spanned London in the 1970s, Paris in the 1980s, and his series on the Arab world in the 1990s. Nozolino is an artist who understands photography as he understands life: directly, without artifice. He uses it to understand the world and himself, pushing it to the limits of his search, his answers, and his experiences. There is no room for complacency in his work. Destruction means destruction, death means death.

The three exhibitions it houses el Círculo de Bellas Artes within the twentieth edition of PhotoEspaña (PHE) are part of a selection made by Alberto García-Alix, National Photography Prize in 1999, under the title Exaltation of beingThis is a carte blanche that PhotoEspaña has granted to the photographer from León, who starred in a major exhibition at the festival's first edition. Alongside Paulo Nozolino, Antoine d'Agata y Pierre Molinier, are part of this proposal Anders Petersen, Karlheinz Weinberger y Teresa Margolles, artists whose creations "depart from the norm and are nourished by the most intimate and passionate," in the words of García-Alix.
