World Press Photo is a non-profit organization founded in Amsterdam in 1955 to support the work of professional photojournalists. Each year it organizes this competition in which an international jury of 19 members selects the winning photographs from among all those submitted by photojournalists, agencies, and newspapers worldwide.

The large number of visitors to the exhibition in each of its editions demonstrates the power of photography to overcome linguistic and cultural boundaries through striking images that show us reality from the very place where it happens.
