Solar eclipses in Spain: science, wonder and how to observe them

On August 12, 2026, the skies over parts of Spain will witness one of the most extraordinary astronomical phenomena: a total solar eclipse. For a few minutes, the Moon will completely obscure the sunlight, and day will be transformed into unexpected darkness, offering a fascinating and rare experience.

To mark this event, we are offering an informative lecture dedicated to exploring the science and history of eclipses. During the session, we will explore how solar and lunar eclipses occur, the scientific expeditions organized throughout history to observe them, and some of the major advances this phenomenon has made possible, from verifying fundamental theories to new ways of understanding the universe.

Through images, visual resources and interactive devices, the activity invites you to experience the eclipse as a moment in which the cosmos becomes tangible: a pause in everyday life that encourages us to look to the sky and rethink our relationship with the universe.

The lecture will be given by Diego López Cámara Ramírez, astrophysicist and researcher at the Institute of Nuclear Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Specializing in the study of some of the most energetic phenomena in the universe, he combines theoretical research with numerical simulations and participates in international astronomical observation projects. Committed to science outreach, he is also the creator of the podcast "Tras los fotons" (Following the Photons) and a regular contributor to Radio UNAM, where he brings astronomy to the general public.
