Catalogue of the homonymous exhibition organized by the Spanish Society of Cultural Commemorations and el Círculo de Bellas ArtesThis exhibition offers a retrospective look at a Spain, recent in time but thankfully very different from today's, emerging from a terrible civil war and entering a dark period. Through posters, newspaper advertisements, and various other graphic testimonies, we witness the evolution of different aspects of Spanish society: living conditions, healthcare, religion, the economy, labor relations, the role of women, popular culture, and so on. Susana Sueiro, the exhibition's curator, has written a lucid and rigorous account of these difficult years from the vantage point of images that, having now fulfilled their original purpose, speak to us with a rare intensity. The volume is completed with a documentary appendix from the General Archive of the Administration and short monographic essays by renowned specialists in the field. The catalogue includes articles by Susana Sueiro Seoane, Francisco Sevillano Calero, Angela Cenarro. Jordi Gracia y Carlos Velasco.
